Session outline

This is a hands-on demonstration and practice session to optimize the utilization of foot and ankle ultrasonography (US) in an outpatient physiatry clinic. This session will cover the practical anatomy, differential diagnosis of common pathologies of foot and ankle, US application to narrow down the differential diagnoses, and physiatric interventions using case examples followed by hands-on practice. US is increasingly utilized in the physiatry clinic; however, the evidence for optimal clinical applications on foot and ankle pathologies is still limited. PM&R residents are enthusiastic in learning US skills but there is a limited opportunity to apply US skills in the care of foot and ankle pathologies.

This session will be valuable for physiatrists to acquire evidence-based indications, up-to-date knowledge in clinical applications, hands-on skills in the diagnosis and interventions, tips on residents and medical student educations, and limitations/practical tips of US applications in the foot and ankle pathologies commonly encountered by physiatrists at the outpatient clinic.

Learning outcomes

Participants will learn about foot and ankle pathologies commonly encountered at outpatient physiatric clinic and evidence-based application of MSK US in common foot and ankle pathologies.

Participants will be able to more appropriately utilize MSK US to manage foot and ankle pathologies and use it as an educational tool (to trainees and patients) in the outpatient clinic.

Participants will acquire practical MSK US skills with constructive feedback. Hands-on practice with experienced physiatrists can help participants recognize common pitfalls in scanning foot and ankle structures. Participants can optimize the diagnosis of foot and ankle pathologies using MSK US.
