Ultrasound based assessment and interventions for common entrapment neuropathies of the upper extremitymish

Session outline

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound (US) has revolutionized musculoskeletal pain diagnosis and medical treatment. Physiatrists often encounter upper extremity compression neuropathies in routine practice. In addition to electrodiagnostic methods, ultrasonography is essential for upper extremity nerve morphology evaluations and often assists in diagnostic assessment. It does so through the real time evaluation of nerve entrapments and structural anomalies, nerve compression sites, and space occupying lesions. Using ultrasonography, physiatrists may localize nerve entrapment sites and guide therapeutic procedures in real time, targeted therapy, and improved patient care.

During this interactive session, three expert faculty led stations will demonstrate morphological sono-anatomy of major upper extremity nerves along their proximal to distal course. Participants will gain insights on USG guided evaluation for common upper extremity nerve entrapment syndromes. This will encompass a deep understanding of nerve anatomy, identification of common entrapment sites, and recognition of typical morphological changes associated with entrapment neuropathies. Additionally, participants will gain insights into interventional techniques that can prove beneficial towards patient management.

After a brief introduction, participants will rotate between three stations of 25 minutes durations each. The above stations will offer faculty-led demonstrations and practical experiences for assessing common upper extremity entrapment neuropathies and teaching US guided approaches to interventional techniques, such as nerve block and hydro-dissection procedures.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize normal morphological sono-anatomy of common upper extremity nerves
  • Identify the potential sites and morphological changes in nerve entrapment of upper extremity
  • Describe ultrasound guided interventional techniques of nerve hydro-dissection/nerve blocks for management of upper extremity entrapment neuropathies
